Doin' the DIY Shuffle...

Make that Crafty DIY shuffle.

Imgp9790

Yesterday a friend and I hopped the 8:30 ferry to Hong Kong for a day of crafty shopping.  Mission accomplished.  We checked out the new Spotlight store, which reminds me of a JoAnn Fabrics Bed, Bath and Beyond fusion.  It was a solid hour of pouring over all things lovely and crafty.  Then we had lunch at the California Pizza Kitchen.  3 words.  Crunchy Thai Salad.  Awesome.

After lunch we road the MTR over to the DIY market in the Sham Shui Po district; several rows and blocks of craft supplies.....in bulk.  Yes, it makes your eyes bulge.

Imgp9789

Do you know the scene in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory where Willy Wonka shows them the candy room? Yeah, it's like that.  The sun always shines on this place.

Imgp9788

Bags, buckets, baskets, drawers, and more are loaded with beads and charms.  Reel after reel of ribbon and trim.  Countless bead woven creatures made with Swarovski crystals.  It is insane.

Imgp9793

Here's a few of my favorite finds from there. If you are crafty and heading to Hong Kong, you don't want to leave this off the travel itinerary.  Give yourself at least two hours to take it all in....if not a day!

It's My Big Sister's Birthday!

Carriecandie3a_2

Happy Birthday Carrie!  It was too difficult to choose just one picture.  So, in the spirit of being a sweet little sister, I chose a few favs...

Carriecandie1a.

Not sure, but I think we were supposed to be vacuuming. That was Ready, our childhood dog's leash around her neck btw.  Can you believe she put up with me?

Carriecandie2a

My artsy Aunt tied scarves and vintage shades to the top of our packages one year at Christmas.  Voila! I look like a drag queen and my sister looks sweet as ever.  I was such a pain in her hiney, but we've had some fun times.  Carrie, you are one of the nicest people I know. I hope your day is so special.  Birthday hugs and wishes from the other side of the world.

Here fishy, fishy, fishy...

You cannot come to Ch!na and not get a little obsessed with gold fish and koi.  Or at least I couldn't.  They are everywhere!  I've even wondered if Rocker needs a pet goldfish.  My aunt always says, "if you keep a goldfish on your kitchen table, it will never die."  Img_06521_small

There's something quite soothing about these creatures.  I'm sure it has something to do with how slow and fluid they are in their movements.  Calming.  Here, they are a symbols of wealth and abundance.

The other day I picked up these hand painted gold fish beads from one of my favorite vendors.

Imgp9947

They are glass bubble like beads where the painting is done on the inside.  Seems very tedious to me.  I've been to this vendor three times and every time he shows me his paintbrush with the tip bent at ninety degrees so he can get inside to paint.  Now, I only wish you could see the paintbrush he claims to use for these super intricate beads.  Seriously, there is no way this brush could do that.  It looks like a road killed paint brush with porcupine needle like bristles.  C'mon dude.  Really, do I have gullible tattooed on my forehead.....in Ch!nese?!?!  However, I always find it a tiny bit amusing that he thinks I believe him.

Imgp9956

And on the other side:

Imgp9954

I know I over paid a ton for this one---they guy totally knew how badly I wanted it.  What was that bit about goldfish bringing wealth and abundance.  Worked for the vendor! As for what I'm going to do with them, I have no idea.  I have a small (but growing out of quite fast) box of special beads like this.  I call it my bead bank and it's pretty much a piggy bank of unique beads.  When I need just the right touch for a piece I go to my bead bank.  Or when I have not a clue where to start on a design.  Or a rainy day.

Get going to...

This may just be one of the most helpful sites for creative people.  Here's a blurb from their welcome letter....

We all know that art is good for the artist. So let's take advantage of that. Use your art to know yourself better, to express your dreams and improve your life. Grab a subscription to Astarte's Mega-Zine and "Make Your SELF a Masterpiece".

I downloaded the Astarte's Mega-Zine Issue #1 to check it out.  From the blank canvas to goal setting, thoughts on inspiration, trying new techniques, reflecting exercises, and the life of an artist in general---this is a zine made by creative people for creative people.  So far there are three issues of Astarte's and the content described within looks as if they've shed light on many issues that we artists confront from day to day.  Needless to say, I'll be subscribing here shortly.

A friend gave me a hat that said something like, "go to your studio and make something." It's famous, I'm sure you've seen it.  Anyway, it's true.  Dig in.  Just dig in and move.  Sometimes when I'm beginning a piece or experimenting with an idea, there is a bit of anxiety like, where is this going? or what if it doesn't work?-even if I had a sketch or a plan.  And it usually doesn't work out.  Then I have to remind myself that it is these bits that I've collected (or endured) that give me the most growth.  At the time it stinks, but the next day (after some good sleep) I can see new solutions or potential from the experiment.  The bottom line is that I always feel better when I've been creating with my two hands.  Period.  If you feel the same, then check out go-make-art.com .

Then and Now....Bead Boards

Bead boards.  I don't know a beader that can live without one (or two or three).  This is my very first bead board from approximately ten years ago.

Imgp9743

Antiques Road Show, here I come!! I don't know if this picture really captures how recessed the slots are.  Crazy deep!  These beads aren't goin' anywhere!  I've determined this board is perfect for a giant who likes to string beads or for lining up felt balls.

Imgp6180

Ha, I just found another picture of it that I took in Suzhou (the old town I used to live in) with the original packaging.  Wow, that surely ups the value fifty cents.  Guess, I didn't use it too much.  On another note, how this thing ended up in Ch!na with me I'll never know.  I do recall getting a little delirious at packing time though.

Now here we are ten years later after some refining....

Imgp0019

Amazing, isn't it?  They kept the bead board gray which is perfect to design on because it's neutral.  The grooves keep your beads accessible and from rolling away.  The measurements around the grooves are accurate.  Lastly, there are some nice sized slots to hold bags and components.  Thank you to our industry people for making the bead board.  It is a super tool!

It wouldn't be Then and Now, if I didn't pull something out from my I remember when... jewelry files.

Imgp7736

Here we have a Candie Cooper Bead Soup original, circa 1995.  I've always loved picking beads from my loose bead bowl and stringing them.  I still love buying unique beads like the fish and elephant.  Some things never change.  But, now for the painful part...

Imgp7732

Speaking of refining!  Holy Cow, what the H E double hockey sticks was I doing?!?!?!  Knot it, no, crimp it, no, knot it, no, BOTH!  Did I mention I taught myself to bead?  Clearly, I was determined to keep the beads from coming off the wire.  Poor clasp.  I do remember having troubles choosing the right stringing material when I first started.

That concludes our torture for today.  What?  You're thirsty for more?  Then go check out Katie and Linda's Then and Now posts.

I didn't tell you this....

but, my sewing machine broke (well, burned up more like it) a week and a half ago.  One minute my office looked like this:

Imgp9747

and the next like this:

Imgp9763

It was terrible to say the least.  It happened because I bought a new converter, or what I thought was a converter.  I plugged it in, hit the pedal, and poof! there goes my sewing machine.  What a beast!  It was really ironic that this pack of ArtGirlz charms was laying next to my machine when it happened.

26803w

Don't panic!  ok.  Help me!  I immediately ran to the internet to search for possible solutions.  Fuse, yes, I must have blown a fuse.  After removing a kagillion screws, I found the fuse and it looked perfect.  *%#!*! This is where Rocker learned several new words.  I was so discouraged as it's a pretty nice machine and there is absolutely no where here to have it repaired.  For someone who uses tools like this in their work, this was not good at all and thus the straw that broke the camel's back as they say.  After I fuss with the machine and eat a whole bowl of grapes while doing it, Mr. S rolls in from work around 8pm and tells me that he got hit by a car earlier that day.  He's fine, but it's every wife's dream to hear that from her husband's mouth, isn't it?!?  Especially living in a second wor1d c()untry.  I worry about him every time he has to get into a car to go to a fact()ry here.  Rules of the road....what rules?  Somewhere in the middle I went out shopping in my neighborhood for a machine, but all I could find was an industrial machine.  Surprised?  I didn't think so.  I know it all could have been worse, but I was pretty discouraged as I had come home from the States with my creative batteries re-charged and some new ideas that required my sewing machine.  And I was pretty tired after the move and re-adjusting to being back in Ch!na.  Even though I've been here nearly two years, there's always a bit of culture sh()ck when I come back.  Hard to explain.  I spent the next day with friends, had a good cry and left it.  On a happy note, one of them knew of a store where they had seen some domestic sewing machines.  Thank God for friends here---we tell each other that often.

And that brings me to today....  My friend called yesterday to tell me she was leaving for 5 weeks tomorrow.  She followed up with, "so we should go to Carefour tomorrow to see if they have a sewing machine for you."  What a pal.  And we found one!

Imgp0064

I took it for a test drive and it works.  It's a bit rickety, but for $100 (the most expensive one they had), it will work just fine.  Knock on wood.  lol.  I'm not going to sew a quilt or anything, I just need to make small bits and stitch on paper.

So, that's that.  I don't normally like to talk about the down side of things, but that was a pretty crummy day and I'm glad it's long gone.  I've learned a lot living here; you have to push on, keep your chin-up (even though it's hard), keep making your stuff and in the end, it usually all ends up working out. That quite possibly goes for anywhere you live.

Well, a typhoon is coming on fast and furious.  I've already heard two loud crashes of glass hitting the pavement with big bolts of lighting in between.  Not good, so I shall close for now and unplug my computer before something else happens!

Messy in the Nesty...

Imgp9990_3

Yesterday I went to tackle the rat's nest in my bird cage studio.  I have a case of the I can't put it back where it goes after I use its.  Lord help me.  Believe it or not, it didn't take too long once I got moving to put it all away.  However, I also have an equally bad case of I'd rather be making somethings.  Do you know what I mean?

So as I was cleaning my work table I kept finding little parts and pieces, scraps, and experiments of sorts that were begging to be used.   Here's assemblage number one:

Imgp0053

Six of One, made Aug. 16-2007

And then I thought, hey, how about a quick nest bead tutorial?  I made two different versions of nests.  The one above was made with approximately 18 in. of 26g. wire.  I first made the bowl shape coil and then back tracked looping the wire in and out of the coil.  Nest #2, that I'm about to show you, was made with 10 in. of 18 g. wire to make the bowl shaped coil base.  Then 26g. wire was worked in and out of the base coil to give it a more nesty feel.  It's easy! Just cut the wire, and make a small loop at one end with round nose pliers.  Continue coiling the wire tightly around the loop and use your thumb and fingers to form it into a bowl shape as you go.  See here:

Imgp9991

You could leave it this way....

Imgp9995

for a very stylized look.  For the modern bird, perhaps.  Or you can make it messy and more nesty by weaving thinner, 26g. wire in and out like this:

Imgp9997

Weave a lot of wire or a little in an organized or messy fashion.

Imgp0015

And there you have it.  It's your nest, make it however you like.

Now you may be wondering...Where'd ya get that?

  • Blue Bird Bead from Ornamentea
  • 18 and 26g. Colourcraft gold wire, bead mat and tools from Beadalon
  • Cherry blossom charm-a back alley here in Ch!na
  • Shell bird-Spores's close-out sale 5 years ago-ish (I'm still kicking myself for not buying the lot!)

Hey, it's Friday everybody!  Have a happy and relaxing weekend.

I'm Painting the Roses Red...

if there were any roses to paint.  It's been soooooo muggy, rainy and gloomy this week (which sans muggy, I secretly love, but this is not really a secret if you've been here before).  But, with all this sporadic typhoon rain, something happened that I can't believe I'm admitting to:  I wore my galosheRs with yoga pants to the studio on Tuesday.  That's gotta quite possibly be a first or second degree fashion crime.  I'm not going to lie to you, it wasn't pretty especially while sporting a ratty paint shirt and Swarovski earrings.  Oh, hell nightmare.  Whatta train wreck!  I blame it all on the earrings.  Once you put on sparkly earrings, nothing else matters.  True?

Imgp9828

I really wanted to show you these paints from Ranger Ink  They're called Paint Dabbers and they sort of resemble a BINGO dabber or is it dobber?  Maybe that's how they say it where I'm from.  Anywho, let me tell ya, a little dab won't do ya here, get one in every color!  I used them with rubber stamps--just dab the stamp with the foam tip, no brush needed.  You can also remove the lid to access the paint.  Very multi-functional and the colors are outta-sight super!

Today's note to self:  Check fashion laws on wearing galosheRs with denim skirt.

August 13, 2007

Ho hum dee dum....

I'm supposed to be gluing some trim on a piece right now, but instead I've been looking at these.  Don't ask.  Only because, I have no idea why. I want one, I guess.  Beautiful Japanese art supply shop though, don'tcha think?

August 12, 2007

Lazy weekend...

Well, for Rocker anyway.

Imgp9770

It was an uneventful weekend.  Pretty low-key as we say back home, well, except for the howling typhoon winds. Yep, it's typhoon season which equals a lot of staying inside and thoughts of crafting a holster for my umbrella. I like the rain, but the idea of getting "taken out" by a flower pot that's blown off someone's balcony doesn't exactly thrill me.  Therefore, we hold an umbrella when we take Trocker out.  We worked on the apartment a little more.  It's a slow gig finding homes for all our stuff.  Yesterday, I walked down to the studio to do a few things, then came back and fixed chili.  Yes, I'm now the proud owner of galoshes....or galosheRs.  Have galoshes, will walk in the rain in Ch!na!  We also watched the scariest movies:  1408 and Mr. Brooks.  Yikes!  Two in a row!  I do love to be good n' scared once in awhile.  After this I'm thinking of putting in 16 Candles (to wash away the scary-ness).  A favorite of mine since I don't know when.  I've seen it a kagillion times.  I can still hear my dad groan when he would see what was on the television.  I not only owned it on tape, but I think TBS played it once a week or something.  And if it wasn't 16 Candles (btw, I own the DVD now)  it was Dirty Dancing.  More groans.  (I'm laughing, poor dad)  But, they're classics, absolute classics. And on that note, I can't type another second, because I'm off to find the DVD case.

I hope you all had a nice weekend. :-)

Cheerful little earfuls...

I found this clipping tucked in a notebook recently so I thought I'd share a little more Then and Now.

Cheerful

Cheerful Little Earfuls-the title gets me every time!  I love vintage jewelry.  Actually, I love jewelry period-new or old.  It's a treat to find unique pieces of history like this in old magazines and such.  If you read the whole ad, you saw that you can put perfume in these gems.  That reminded me of the time I put scented oils in the center of some felt flower brooches when I first started felting.

Flower_brooches

It worked for awhile, but the smell eventually faded so you would have to add more.  Come to think of it, I've found and heard from others that the scent of lavender helps to calm and relieve tension.  Hmmm, that's scent for thought.  I can see it now, Stress-a-little Lessfuls, lavender scented jewelry for those long, tedious work days.  Now that's savvy!

Then....and Now

Imgp9750_2

Earrings, Candie Cooper, circa 1996 (a long time ago)

Katie and I were in the car for three hours on the way to the CHA show in Chicago.  Somewhere in between Warsaw, In and Chicago, I told her about finding a friendly plastic brooch in a long lost box of my junk buried deep in my parents attic.  I think I made it in 7th grade.  Treasure?  I don't believe so!  Katie mentioned talking with another friend about sharing then and now photos on their blogs.  "Want to do it?"  she asked.  So here we are.

I've been making jewelry for a long time.  It started somewhere after sixth grade and every year, I make a little bit more.  It's been fun (and humbling) rediscovering these little pieces of where I come from and seeing how I've grown.  Some things haven't changed a bit---and thankfully some things have.

That leads me to tell you about the earrings pictured.  It all started when I was given a pair of handmade beaded earrings as a Christmas gift.  In my mind, the woman who made them was a Rock-star.  Make your own earrings?  Holy cow, I had to try it.  So, these are some of the veeeeeerrrrry first earrings I made.  I have no idea how they ended up in China.  I actually think at some point I was going to salvage the beads???  No idea.  Anyway, I'm so glad to have them here for when I teach jewelry making classes.  Why?  Because learning to make perfectly round loops at the end of a wire is tricky.  After a few demonstrations, I let the students try it on their own.  Inevitably they worry because their loops are maybe more oval shape than round.  Or one loop is bigger than the other.  Or their wire is a little gnarly from the pliers and bending it several times.  It's easy to get discouraged and that's about the time when I pull out my trusty earrings to illustrate the fact that practice really does make perfect.

Imgp9754

And it works!!!....every time.  They notice by the end of class that every loop gets a little better than the one before. We all have to start somewhere, no matter what we're doing.

I told Katie, I probably have at least six or seven more then and now posts I could do.  So stay tuned for a second helping of humble pie.

Beading With Crystals...

51caom3zx9l__aa240_

There's a new beading book on the block with two of my designs in it.  I got a copy in the mail recently and it did not disappoint....promise!  It starts with a brief history of crystals followed by material and tool information.  You can find techniques like knotting, stringing, off-loom beading, wire working and moi's how to weave beads into gems like these:

Imgp9704

I enjoy how the designs showcase the wide variety of crystal shapes and components.  There are several designs in the book that I want to make for myself too!  Inspirational from all angles, I give it 5 Swarovski Star Pendants!

Beading with Crystals is authored by Katherine Aimone and Jean Campbell, published by Lark Books.
