Saving the Animals...

You've all heard the terrible reports of the recent earthquake here and it keeps getting worse.  The people here have pulled together and are accomplishing extraordinary things and this is one of them...

S-Tremor_going_home_on_bus_Donata

One of the rescued dogs, Pi.

I was listening to the radio today and caught the tail end of this woman's interview.  She founded and runs a bear sanctuary in Chengdu, near the earthquake's major damage area.  She and her team have been assisting with relief efforts since the beginning---helping people and rescuing dogs and cats.  They have saved over 50 animals so far and according to her blog, the gov't called and said they have more. Check out her blog for more incredible and courageous accounts.  You can imagine the costs that go with rescue.  If you have a spare couple of dollars, here's a link to her donation button.  I've poked around her site and what they are doing really is remarkable.  Thank goodness for angels.

Home Sweet Home...

Imgp1516

It seemed like a brilliant idea to sit in front of the movie screen on the plane ride home.  A little bit of leg room, full screen view---makes sense.  Although, that was when I was booking my tickets while sitting on my couch.  Little did I know my legs couldn't stretch all the way out in front of me.  I also thought the flight home would be around 11 hours. Nope, the captain came on the speaker and said, "our total flight time today will be 14 hours and 52 minutes."  I turned to the girl next to me and said, "what did he just say?!?"  I love direct flights, but eeesh, that was a long time!  I'm pretty sure I was seeing mirages of Lazy Boy chairs and my very own Starbucks barista.  Thank the Lord for all the free magazines I picked up at CHA!

The trip was all worth it start to finish.  I got to catch up with everyone and meet so many new and exciting people.  I came home to a lovely bouquet of flowers---thank you Butchy.

Imgp1523

And a very relieved pup---he's never thrilled when the pack splits up.

Imgp1546

This dog makes our hearts melt.  I can hear all your gagging noises, but I don't care!  When I got home, Rocker was scampering and hopping about (doing the happy dance, as we say).  I even got a few yelps of joy.  I set my suitcase down and then my purse and turned around to find Rocker perched on top of my suitcase-tail wagging looking straight up at me.  I could go on, but it's time to make the donuts....

Where's My Writer's Bump?!?!?

Just now I turned to Mr. Savvy to announce that my writer's bump is nearly gone.  "Huh?" was his response.  It didn't help that I was flashing him my ring finger.  Now if you held your pencil properly (unlike me), it should be on your middle finger.  I try not to wave my middle finger at my husband too often....at least not to his face.  ;-)  He didn't get it, so I said, "I'm googling it!"  "Writer's Bump"---I'm not the only one to notice this phenomenon.  Apparently, the writer's bump is well on it's way to extinction.  I'm sad.  This is comparable to when little kids ask what a typewriter is.

P.S.  I believe my older sister's writer's bump is on her ring finger as well.  Hmmmm.

We've been sick...

Last Friday I came down with the sinus infection from H.E. double hockey sticks.

Imgp9869

And Rocker's been having sinus infection sympathy pains.  He's been by my side the whole time.  Sigh.  I love this dog.  I'm sure he would whip up some chicken soup if he could.  All though it would be sans chicken by the time he was done because he cannot help himself when it comes to chicken.

Yesterday, I taught my first class of a four week beginner jewelry course at the Birdcage Studio.  Students learned to make three styles of earrings so there were lots of opportunities to make loops.  Simple loops, wrapped loops and more simple loops.  I love to see practice makes perfect in action.  By the end everyone's loops were looking good.  It was a good day and I was proud of them for taking on the challenge.

FYI:  Make It Mine---a cool new crafty mag coming to newsstands near you.  I saw some of the projects from the first issue and they looked really fun and unique.

On that note, it's time for coffee! I hope you're all doing well.

Another Happy Birthday....

Wedding_049_3

To my dad!  Most of the pictures I have of my dad are him being a #1 grandpa in action.  Note plastic tools in his shirt pocket.  Not unlike many, my nephew adores dad.  He is a super great guy.  Dad, I hope it's a happy one.  hugs.

Birthday Beading...

Imgp9848

Last night we went to a surprise birthday dinner for our friend Meg.  Meg took one of my beading classes last spring and has been hooked on jewelry making ever since.  As an extra surprise, I and another friend brought a handful of beads and charms from our stash to the party.

Imgp9832

Earlier in the day I connected one end of a toggle clasp to a bracelet length wire so it would be ready for some birthday beading.  That night at dinner, while we were waiting for our food to come, this festive bowl o' beads was presented to Meg along with the wire.  The idea was for each person to string one bead or charm onto the wire and pass the bowl on to the next person, creating a special bracelet made by all of us.  We started with the birthday-girl and went from there.

Imgp9834

Another crafty pal, Nancy carefully selecting her bead.  Of course you know how hard it is for women to pick just one bead.  "Can I put one spacer bead AND a bead on?  How about a charm AND a bead?"  So sneaky!

  Imgp9842

Who doesn't love to watch men pick through a bowl of beads?  Really searching, searching, and searching for just the right bead.  It was very amusing to see who added what to the bracelet.

Imgp9844

Here's Meg with her finished bracelet.  There were ten of us and the beads and wire went around the table two times which was just about perfect.  I brought along a crimp bead and crimping pliers so I could finish the bracelet on the spot.  Meg was thrilled when we gave her the leftover beads and charms for her future creations.  If you are celebrating a friend's birthday, this was definitely a fun activity.  We had some great laughs while assembling and the birthday-girl got to take home a special keepsake from the party.

Check out my Savvy Crafter column in this month's Simply Beads magazine for more fun like this.

It's My Big Sister's Birthday!

Carriecandie3a_2

Happy Birthday Carrie!  It was too difficult to choose just one picture.  So, in the spirit of being a sweet little sister, I chose a few favs...

Carriecandie1a.

Not sure, but I think we were supposed to be vacuuming. That was Ready, our childhood dog's leash around her neck btw.  Can you believe she put up with me?

Carriecandie2a

My artsy Aunt tied scarves and vintage shades to the top of our packages one year at Christmas.  Voila! I look like a drag queen and my sister looks sweet as ever.  I was such a pain in her hiney, but we've had some fun times.  Carrie, you are one of the nicest people I know. I hope your day is so special.  Birthday hugs and wishes from the other side of the world.

I didn't tell you this....

but, my sewing machine broke (well, burned up more like it) a week and a half ago.  One minute my office looked like this:

Imgp9747

and the next like this:

Imgp9763

It was terrible to say the least.  It happened because I bought a new converter, or what I thought was a converter.  I plugged it in, hit the pedal, and poof! there goes my sewing machine.  What a beast!  It was really ironic that this pack of ArtGirlz charms was laying next to my machine when it happened.

26803w

Don't panic!  ok.  Help me!  I immediately ran to the internet to search for possible solutions.  Fuse, yes, I must have blown a fuse.  After removing a kagillion screws, I found the fuse and it looked perfect.  *%#!*! This is where Rocker learned several new words.  I was so discouraged as it's a pretty nice machine and there is absolutely no where here to have it repaired.  For someone who uses tools like this in their work, this was not good at all and thus the straw that broke the camel's back as they say.  After I fuss with the machine and eat a whole bowl of grapes while doing it, Mr. S rolls in from work around 8pm and tells me that he got hit by a car earlier that day.  He's fine, but it's every wife's dream to hear that from her husband's mouth, isn't it?!?  Especially living in a second wor1d c()untry.  I worry about him every time he has to get into a car to go to a fact()ry here.  Rules of the road....what rules?  Somewhere in the middle I went out shopping in my neighborhood for a machine, but all I could find was an industrial machine.  Surprised?  I didn't think so.  I know it all could have been worse, but I was pretty discouraged as I had come home from the States with my creative batteries re-charged and some new ideas that required my sewing machine.  And I was pretty tired after the move and re-adjusting to being back in Ch!na.  Even though I've been here nearly two years, there's always a bit of culture sh()ck when I come back.  Hard to explain.  I spent the next day with friends, had a good cry and left it.  On a happy note, one of them knew of a store where they had seen some domestic sewing machines.  Thank God for friends here---we tell each other that often.

And that brings me to today....  My friend called yesterday to tell me she was leaving for 5 weeks tomorrow.  She followed up with, "so we should go to Carefour tomorrow to see if they have a sewing machine for you."  What a pal.  And we found one!

Imgp0064

I took it for a test drive and it works.  It's a bit rickety, but for $100 (the most expensive one they had), it will work just fine.  Knock on wood.  lol.  I'm not going to sew a quilt or anything, I just need to make small bits and stitch on paper.

So, that's that.  I don't normally like to talk about the down side of things, but that was a pretty crummy day and I'm glad it's long gone.  I've learned a lot living here; you have to push on, keep your chin-up (even though it's hard), keep making your stuff and in the end, it usually all ends up working out. That quite possibly goes for anywhere you live.

Well, a typhoon is coming on fast and furious.  I've already heard two loud crashes of glass hitting the pavement with big bolts of lighting in between.  Not good, so I shall close for now and unplug my computer before something else happens!

Almost there...

Imgp9687

Checking our email bright and early this morning at Starbucks.  93 degrees, no breeze, 110% humidity and I'm drinking a hot latte out on the porch.  Hopefully the magical internet guy will appear at our new apartment soon.

Today, when checking in on blogs, I see that Cynthia has some fabulous desktop calendars for downloading.  (C, I tried to comment, but my secret browser blocked me from doing so).  They are super cool, so run on over and check em' out.

And on that note, I'm off because the amount of fluid dripping off my neck is getting embarrassing, not to mention the bed head hair!

Hello Again...

Imgp9620

We're alive....barely.  Made it home Friday night (our time) after a good trip to turn around and start our move.  Did I tell you we have to move?  I only found out myself 5 days before we left for the States.  Gotta love that.  The Reader's Digest version goes like this: our cute little apartment was sold, rent went through the ceiling, The Savvy's found a new pad.  We have to be out of this apartment by the 1st and after our big push today, we're gonna make it.  Wait til' you see pictures of the new digs.  Red and Orange couch with a pastel purple accent wall!  Woo, baby!  I would describe it as Mod Squad meets Pee Wee Herman.  I keep hearing Tim Gunn from Project Runway in my head, "Make it work.  Just make it work!"   And that's what we're doing...

A few highlights from the trip...

Imgp9668

Craft and Hobby Show was a treat---more to come on that one as soon as I beg kkkkatie to send me over some photos.  This is the only one I took in four days (shame on me)--that's us sitting below in a swanky booth at the Hyatt on the last day.  I met so many wonderful folks at the show my head was spinning.  BTW Madge has some great CHA photos on her blog.

And we spent the last two days of the trip in downtown Chicago because we had to renew our Visas (minor detail).  We ate at our favorite restaurant, Lou Mitchell's and went to see Wicked.  It was all spectacular.

Now here we are back in China.  Two jammed packed weeks makes it seem like a dream.  It's never enough time to catch up with everyone so until next time...

Ack! Rat in the House!

That's one of my favorite lines from Along Came Polly (when Reuben first sees Polly's ferret in her apartment).

Rocker and I were waiting on the elevator when out of the corner of my eye, I see Mr. Savvy doing the zowie chowie dance out the door.  "What's wrong with you," I say.  And then I see IT.  Gasp! Horror! as IT wedges itself in between the door and the frame (as in, when you open the door, IT's going into our apartment).  "What are we going to do?!?!?"

Imgp1295_2

Mr. Savvy casually says, "It's ok, they eat bugs.  We've probably already got 6 in the apartment." Gasp!  Shock! (again) We leave IT on the outside of the door and after Rock's walk, Mr. Savvy shewed it away.  I make it sound like it was no big deal, but it was a bit of an ordeal to say the least.

Last night we went to a garden party and there were roaches and geckos on the side of the house.  Great atmosphere amidst the candle light.  And someone said that around these parts, it's supposedly good luck if a gecko comes into your house.  Is it me, or does that sound like what a clever parent would say to their child at bedtime.  "Don't worry about that ol' gecko sneaking into your bed, it's good luck!"  I don't know how you feel, but I'll take my chances.

P.S. Thanks for the comments on the new blog.  I really appreciate it.

Welcome to My New Nest...

Well, here we are....  Welcome & make yourself comfy because this is where I'll be posting from now on.

Imgp1302_small

First off, a (big) THANK YOU to my pal, Krissy, for a job well done on the banner.  It fits me well as I always have a lot of odds and ends laying on my work table.  And a second (big) THANK YOU to my husband, Butch, for thinking up The Savvy Crafter.  Another good fit for me because my designs have often been described as clever.  It's also no secret that since I moved here to the East, I've had to become pretty savvy on what materials I use in my designs.  It's not so easy to get to the crafty super-stores anymore.  Sob, sniff.  Ok, enough.

Thanks always for checking in and feel free to drop me a line in the comments.  :-) c
